Studying Engineering
I had two advisors at university who encouraged me to pusrue engineering by helping me to see the practical side of science. One professor helped me get a part-time job as a technician with a local soil mechanics consulting firm. This allowed me to apply some of the aspects of what I learned in school. The other introduced me to the local student chapter of ASTM.

I recognized early on that I wasn't the theoretical-, research-orientated type because I like a pragmatic and systematic approach to solving problems. I like to make things, but I do not have the talent or patience for inventing them. I also tend to categorize findings and activities in a somewhat logical, analytical fashion. Thus, engineering as an applied science had great appeal for me.

Career Life
During the 30 plus years of my career as a geotechnical engineer, certain periods did involve some very trying, challenging times—particularly in the earlier days with extensive travel, long stretches away from home, and primitive living conditions in remote regions of Canada. Being an immigrant presented its own, unique challenges. However, these periods turned out to be exciting and character building.

With some patience, I was fortunate to identify and join an organization which was just beginning to promote specialized technologies in soil reinforcement. This company, the Reinforced Earth Company Ltd., has since provided me the chance to learn, build, and enjoy many facets of a focused engineering career (including design, construction, project and business management).

Life Outside Of Work
I actively participated in such respected societies as the Canadian Goetechnical Society, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineers, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. Many of my colleagues with whom I worked can attest to the satisfaction of developing lasting friendships and sharing experiences through these societies.

I have a family of four, which includes a daughter and a son. My wife has contributed tremendously to my career through her understanding and encouragement. We share common interests in music, gardening, society conferences, and community activities.

Engineering is not a glamorous profession, however it is a profession that can be highly gratifying. It is a profession of significant value to society, and a profession which requires patience, character, and above all, integrity. I'm glad I made the choice to pursue engineering.
